Data Description
NHS Support Agencies and Shared Services in England. These take the form of ‘Shared Services’ and ‘Health Informatics Services’, which are formed when two or more organisations that work closely together geographically and operationally, decide to centralise and merge common services (such as Human Resources, IT or Finance Departments).
How Data is Maintained
Information on NHS Support Agencies is relayed to ODS via the organisations in question. Changes are facilitated by an established ODS contact based within the organisation (referred to as an OC1). No changes to the records associated to an organisation can be carried out without the express permission of the contact for that organisation, although exceptions can occur such as where a contact is no longer working at an organisation, or changes have been agreed with an NHS England national programme (i.e. COVID vaccination programme).

Legacy 'Parent' Mapping
Traditionally, some systems have referred to a 'parent' relationship between organisation/site records. Although 'parent' is not one of the named relationship types that ODS publish, there has previously been mappings that indicate which relationship types between specific organisation types, could be interpreted as 'parent' relationships.
The legacy parent mapping (for active org types) is shared below for information but should be used with caution. Please note that ODS intend to move away from RE5 'in the geography of' relationships. The modern equivalent is a dynamic mapping from the org/site postcode to the Postcode CodeSystem. The equivalent values in Data Search and Export and the Organisation Data Terminology FHIR R4 API are shown below where relevant. It is recommended to use these new dynamic postcode based values, rather than legacy RE5 'in the geography of' relationships.
